"Yes" "German Shep Mix" "Buck" "Buck was a German Shepard mixed breed experimental dog developed by the Army. He could smell out the enemy at 350+ yards as well as find explosives buried six feet under ground. On our first mission together in Nam, Buck saved my life by alerting on a trip wire I was about to step onto. From that moment on, my life was completely dependant on him. The combat troops in the field loved Buck because when he was off patrol duty he would give every guy a doggy kiss that wanted one and would do flips chasing a frezby. Buck would bring up the spirits of every GI by protecting, entertaining and yes loving every man in every patrol we were assigned to. Buck never lost a man to an ambush, trip wire or pungy pit. Buck was killed when he missed a trip wire. HIs photograph has always been posted on a wall in every home I have lived in because I owe my existance to that dogs devotion and courage. "

I am a Military Police Officer on temporary duty from the 82nd Airborne Division, enroute to a tour in Korea. I just wanted to write you guys a note to say that I just finished watching War Dogs on Discovery. It was, without a doubt, the most emotion-evoking documentary that I have ever watched. You guys did a FANTASTIC job!!! I am entering my second week of the Handler's Course and was just assigned my K9 partner, ""Baron"". He is ""green"", or, totally untrained. I expect that I will learn as much from him as he will from me. Each commercial break of War Dogs gave me just enough time to grab another handful of tissues. There are few things in this world that can bring me to tears, but your documentary brought this ""tough"" soldier to his emotional knees repeatedly. I am embarrassed at the decision of our government to leave the Vietnam dogs behind, it is obvious that the person who made that decision never had spent the mere instant necessary to bond with a dedicated Military Working Dog. Thank you for your documentary, and thanks to the heroes on two and four legs who withstood political and social pressure and did not forget that their sole mission is to follow orders and preserve this great freedom that we all enjoy. "yes" "German Shepard" "King" "The reality of war was quick to come to the 30 of us who arrived at Ton So Nhut Air Base. Just a few nights before, a Sentry Dog Handler and his Dog had been wounded. The dog had lost part of his face from an AK-47 bullet. I don't know what ever happened to the dog or his handler as our unit was split up and some went to Phu Cat Air Base and the rest of us went to Tuy Hoa Air Base. Patrols were from sundown until sun up and many were the night when the sky was illuminated by tracers and ribbons of fire from ""Puff the Dragon"" circling above. I had to leave King when I returned to the states and never knew what happened to him. He was almost 8 yrs old and the stress of the war was not good for him so I doubt he was able to survive for very long. I still remember the last time I saw him and often wonder what he was thinking when I didn't come back for him. Just maybe someone will see this message and contact me about him. It is about time for a memorial and I will be happy to assist. Thanks.

"yes" "Thor, Buns, Smokey, Bandit, Penny, Astor" "German Shepard, except Penny (Beagle)" "I by chance tuned to the discovery channel and notice a dog team on the picture. I flipped back immediately to discover that it was a special on MWD's. I was in tears during most of the program. I served as a dog handler throughout my AD tenure. I spent 8 years working Patrol/Narcotic and 2 years Patrol/Explosive. My life was dedicated solely to buddy. My wife even accused me of loving my dog more than I did her. Sometimes that was true! I could depend on him more than I could her. The only war time tasking I was involved in was during Operation Just Cause. I spent many hours working detection during the Gulf War, however, that was at my home station. I have completed several missions with the Secret Service and Department of State all across Eastern Europe. I miss being a dog handler badly. Unfortunately the USAFR does not have the means to support such a project. What really caught my attention to this story is based from a personal crisis I had during the NCO Leadership Course. I wanted to do a topic speech on MWD's utilized in Vietnam. As was stated in the War Dogs documentary, there wasn't a lot of data thata was kept. This made my speech very tough to complete. I did have the opportunity to work with a Flt Sgt, who was stationed in Vietnam as a dog handler. He gave me some definite insight on the difference of ""tours of duty"" we as handlers perform in the ""now"" military. In my career, I gained extensive experience and knowledge working with my four legged brothers. God, how I miss it. The War Dogs Story was an absoulte smash. My fiance' even enjoyed it as much as I did. She could see the happiness, sorrow and pain I felt throughout the entire show. As we use to say, from the NIGHTSTALKERS at KUNSAN AB, ROK, ""TALK SH*T, GET BIT! To all my brother and sister handlers in the ARMY, a big HOOAH to you; the Marines, (my father was an MP), Semper Fi and to the Navy,(the handlers I went through with at Contraband School), watch where you drop that Beagle! The sacrifice the dogs and handlers made in Vietnam can never be truly appreciated, but I would like to help give credit to the dogs and handlers, any way I can. The War Dogs presentation was just the beginning. Thank you all for a magnificent story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have watched many programs on Viet Nam and I must admit, War Dogs, is without a doubt, the most moving, poignant and gut-wrenching documentary I have watched. I was torn between pride for what the dogs and their handlers did and the shame that our country left these animals....no, these soldiers behind. Please let me know how I can make a donation to the memorial fund. Thank you for letting the country know about these forgotten but brave members of our military history. "

"yes" "German Shepard" "?" Mr. Mitchell: On June 5, 1998 - Lt... James Blackmore of Engine Co. 332, Brooklyn, NY died in the line of duty fighting a five alarm blaze on Atlantic Ave in the East New York section of Brooklyn. He entered the burning building in search of a reported trapped person on the second floor. The floor collapsed beneath his team and they fell into a raging inferno. Jim Blackmore died within minutes and another fire officer Capt. Scott LaPiedra died 30 days later. Eight other firefighters were also injured in the blaze,4 of them seriously. The City of NY held a tremendous funeral for Jimmy. This info is all in the NY Newspapers and I won't go into anymore detail. Except that the Gov. of the State of NY; The Mayor of the City of NY: The Fire Commissioner of NYC along with the Catholic Bishop of his Dioceses all spoke at his funeral mass. To a man, they all cited his service as a Marine in Vietnam. These were men who didn't know Jimmy. I did ! I am his brother-in law. Married to his younger sister. Although we were good friends, Jimmy never spoke to me about his Vietnam time, and at times I would try to get him to open up , but he never would. He never really spoke to his family about Vietnam, and he had 7 brothers and 3 sisters. None of us in the family know much about his service during his Vietnam tour. What we do know is that he was in the K-9 Unit of the USMC during the years 1968-1969. He served in the Da-Nang Area. Thats all we know. Mr.. Mitchell if you could help me in establishing Jimmy's service record and areas of operation for his family it would be much appreciated. His Mother and Father, who moved to Florida with us 7 years ago do not have his records. They have his Vietnam Service Medal and four other campaign ribbons, none of which I can identify(even over the USN Site) on the internet. I found this site and your name by trying to search for these things. Maybe if you could modify and post this letter we could possibly contact some men who knew Jimmy in his unit in Vietnam. Myself, My Wife, Her Parents and especially Jimmy's Wife and Kids and the Fire Department of New York City would benefit by any knowledge gained in the pursuit to know about a Great American Hero. It was difficult to hold back my tears and emotions when asked to explain the painstaking details of what happened the night of November 11, 1967 in Dau Tieng. The night the VC attacked our kennel. It was compounded by trying to explain the difficulty of leaving Timber and Clipper behind. The dogs did not know they were marked for death by the government that trained them to save lives. They gave their lives so I could live to tell about their heroic deeds under extrodinary combat situations. Charlie Cargo and I were Military Advisors for the filming of the reenactment scenes of ""War Dogs."" Many times we both had to walk away from the live sets to regain our composure. I have recently completed writing my book ""Dogging the VC."" It is about my personal experience in Vietnam as an Army infantryman and scout dog handler. I have an Agent who is currently searching for a publisher. Hopefully my book will get published in 1999. I want to thank the thousands of people who took the time to post their messages of love and sensitivity for our war dogs. I also appreciated their messages of outrage against the political and military machine that deliberatley left the Vietnam war dogs behind to die on the battlefield or be disposed of by other means. Nature's Recipe, GRB Entertainment, and our VDHA did a superb job of putting our story together and getting in front of the public where it needed to be. Without them, our story would have remained within our small family of war dog handlers and loved ones. See you at the dedication of the War Dogs Memorials in the year 2000. " John C. "I was sooooo moved by your program. My children learned something tonight. I have never even heard of the war-dogs being used. I thank you for sharing this information. I am also outraged that those men were not allowed to take their dogs, their family, home with them. I'm sorry for posting this information here but there was no place else to post my thoughts and concerns for the men and the dogs that gave their lives for this country and my freedom. Thank you to all." "Dianna" "2/15/99" "As a Civilian, would like to know who ordered dogs left behind in Vietnam? Is the person, or persons responsible for this decision still alive? Is there any way to contact them?"
David Murphy "2/15/99" "I wasn't there, I wasn't old enough when the war was fought...GOD BLESS those of you and the dogs that were!"
Michael Miller "2/15/99""First.THANK ALL of you that served! I am a young K-9 handler,(fire) I was very touched and moved, by what I seen on the TV tonight!!!! I know what it means to have a dog ""partner""!!! Please..I wish to talk to ANYONE that can give me info on making a donation to the memorial! Lets all make this happen, so WE all can so what these ""Vetrans"", frinds, and last but not least...OUR partners mean to us all!! Thank ALL of you, be safe, and God bless!"
Bj Beaujon "2/15/99""No" "Chow Mix" "Simba" "I am sorry, I was not in the military. The War-Dog special on February 15, 1999 touched me very much.I think the world of Vietnam Vets, respect and love them. When I heard about the WarDogs, I was moved even more. I love animals, especially dogs. I cried thru most of the program, then my heart sank and I cried more when at the end you said we had to leave most of our buddies over there. The handlers of the dogs must have gone home with broken hearts to have to leave their closest friends to a cruel fate. I know war is cruel but this whole event upset and moved me. Selfless devotion, unquestioned loyalty, unconditional love, and sacrificial actions are what these Creatures made of, who surely God has given us and our boys in the military as angels to stay by our side. I don't have many of the answers of life, but these words come from my heart. We can say a prayer for our boys who had to come home from Vietnam after leaving their dogs in a strange distant and violent land. "
"Viewer of documentary (Animal/DOG lover)I was just being born while you all were risking your lives for me. Caught the end of the documentary. I will be purchasing the video. I just want you all to visit the Human Society web site (easy to find) regarding the use of Dog and cat fur for merchandise sold here in the USA. Vietman (Far East) etc. are probably torturing (SKIN THEM ALIVE) the off spring of your protectors right now. Please visit the site for more information on what we can do to stop the torture of these animals. I am so damn mad these animals were left behind too! Thank you for honoring these brave animals of which I would have known nothing about until now. God bless all of you and thank you from the bottom of my heart. SINCERELY, A MOM in honor of my Uncle Dick Mason (did not serve in Vietnam, but died while in the Air Force)"
Susan A. Smith "2/15/99"
"2/15/99" "great job with documentary, would like to know if can send money to help build memorial?"
Roger Thornhill "2/16/99" "I was not in Viet Nam or any service. I am simply a patriot and a dog lover. After seeing the TV special I want to help! I have added you to my web site link page. I hope you don't mind. http://www.uncledave.org/links.html I'll be buying the food and a t-shirt. I will also be telling anyone willing to listen about your effort. Good luck. The dogs and the humans that came home from 'Nam deserve better than how we have been treating them."
"Uncle Dave"" Messinger" "2/16/99" "I'm a 76 grad, and all I can say is thank you for your service. This special on War dogs was moving. Thank-you and your dogs for your great sacrifice and devotion. I did not serve, but I cry when I see your sacrifices. Again, Thank-You, God Bless You All!"
Henry Haney "2/16/99" "I was not there due to my age- I didn't become available to go until early 70's. But I am hsitory buff and a very firm dog lover. I think this idea of the memorial is fanatastic. I can't help finacially very much- maybe a $100.00 a month but would like to do something. I think it would be nice if a duplicate could be placed at the home of the war dogs and the Infantry. The one for the Washington area, I think, would look great and representative of what occurred, if it would be placed forward of the Vietbnam memorial- the one with the 3 grunts as if they were patrolling together."
Joe Vaughn "2/16/99" "I am sorry I was not in the war, but I do want to contribute to the building of the memorial... My name is Kathryn Mary Olsen. I cannot stop crying after viewing this most touching and upsetting documentary ... How cruel our government was to these valiant heroes and heroines.
Kathryn Mary Olsen "2/16/99" "I am a high school history teacher currently teaching a course ""Heroes in History"" - would love to present this to my class - in addition to video are there any books, articles, short stories? How could I get someone to speak to my class? Would love any information? Thank you so much"
Nancy Hammarstrom "2/16/99" "I was born on June 26, 1966. I did not serve as I of course was too young. There are a couple of comments I would like to make. 1. To those of you who served a sincere thanks for doing your duty. I was almost 10 years old when the war ended and remember to this day watching our men return home live on tv. 2. I own 2 golden retrievers. One is 4yrs old, and the other is 3. I watched ""War Dogs"" last night and came away with a sense of respect, sadness, and anger as to how Man's Best Friend who give his/her life for us could be abandoned like that. As I watched your riveting show, I held both of dogs with tears in my eyes. I must admit I never knew about War Dogs before. Thank you for brining this to my attention. I will stop by my local Petsmart and purchase Naturesrecipe to support the memorial cause. May those of you who served in Vietnam find your peace. Jim Eiden"
James Eiden "2/16/99" "It says on here that you can write even if you were an ""other"", not in the service or a dog handler in Vietnam, but I don't see where, so I'll try this first. I watched the War Dogs documentary last night on TV, and sobbed my way through it. I have had German Shepherds for 12 years now, and the breed is the most magnificent thing I have ever seen. These incredible, most beautiful of dogs, are more human than dog in intelligence and psychic ability and companionship, while retaining the magnificent attributes of dog - namely unconditional love and bravery and self-sacrifice. I was HORRIFIED to learn that they had been abandoned in Vietnam as ""war equipment."" Guess we probably should have taken our children from the USA and abandoned them there too--it's the same thing. One more thing our lovely military establishment has done to prove what absolute dicks they are. I wanted to write to just say that 1) I support the Nam vets totally and feel and care for their pain. I was born in 1950 and grew up in that era and have many friends who are Nam vets, although none who were dog handlers. I think you guys did an incredible job over there in the toughest of all possible worlds, betrayal by your own government. 2) I have an incredible love and respect for German Shepherds, My present companion is a 90-pound sable purebred 2-year-old Shepherd named Merlin, who is the best companion I have ever had in my life, man or beast. He is truly magical. I would love to hear from anyone cares to write me or to correspond. Thank you so much for the job you did in Vietnam."
Sally Roach "2/16/99""I saw the program last night. I just wanted to say thank you to all of the curageos men, women, and animals who served and died to give me the freedoms I have today. It is a shame this country doesnt do more to honor these people and animals. JUst so you know thank you and God bless.
"I did not serve in Vietnam, I was too young and being a girl in those days probably did not help. However, I have been an avid dog lover for as long as I can remember. I myself have trained seeing eye dogs for the blind in the past. I have never been without a dog since I was 4 years old. I am now 35 and the very proud owner of my 2 ""doggie daughters"" Asti who is my 8 year old Cocker Spaniel and Kahlua, my 4 year old Keeshound/shepard mix. I would probably die for my girls as they would for me. I watched the documentary ""War Dogs"" a few times, always with a box of tissues close by. I can't begin to tell you how moving it was. I hae since told everyone I see about it. Yes they are the forgotten heos but they will always remain heros in your heart and soul. These dogs know that they could not have had better handlers and more love than these soldiers gave them and I firmly beleive they know that to this day. There is now warmer, unconditional love than the love of a dog. All the service men should be commended a blessed. A war dog memorial?? Please put me high on the list of people more in favor of that than other things the government and groups may propose. It will be a great tribute to the men and dogs that served our country and hopefully will pave the way for future respect for service and police dogs. God bless you all!!!!!!"

Dani "Wolfhawk's Lady aka Dani" "2/16/99" "I am a twenty year old woman who's father served in Vietnam. I watched the program about the war dogs on the Discovery channel and it was very emotional for me being an animal lover. The stories were so amazing I had to contact this website. I hope that one of the handlers will contact me through e-mail. I would like to hear more about the forgotten heros. I was devastated to find out that so many of the dogs were left to be euthanized. I don't know how anyone with a soul could have allowed such a thing to happen to those loving creatures who saved so many lives. I hope to see more documentaries about the war dogs and the handlers who loved them."
Danielle Solimando "2/16/99" "No, I wasn't there. But my family & I watched the special on Discovery last night. And you were right. I'll never look at my dog the same way again. She's a beautiful German Shepherd/golden lab mix, brindled, named Hannah whose eyes and expressive face just melt your heart when she ""looks at you just right"". After your program, it was very quiet in our house for awhile. I just sat on the floor, held her (all 91 pounds of her), and just cried. I know how horrible it must have been for those men to leave their wonderful partners/companions behind. My heart breaks as much for them as for their dogs. Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful, heartbreaking stories of these heros - both 2 legged and 4 legged. We will absolutely make a donation! Please let us know when & where. "Robi Bratton wife of a Vietnam era veteran, served in Germany and US, ASA" Robi Bratton "2/16/99""I saw the war dogs documentary on 2/15/99. I am not currently in the service but was at one time without any knowledge that these dogs and handlers existed. I was both horrified and petrified with shame and sadness for these dogs. I currently am training my dogs for search and rescue and treat them like kings and queens. When I am made fun of because I spoil them, I tell them they really don't know dogs then do they. It's matter a matter of respect. "
"Sgt." "YES" "German Shepherd" "Kaisor" "I was to young for ""NAM"" so thank you all and your K-9 partners. I am a Police officer and for 6 years served as a handler. My partner Kaiser had on several occations made my job easier and had saved my life, disarming a suspect. I watched DOGS OF WAR with a tear in my eye for you and your dogs. What the Government did to those heros was wrong and I realized how lucky I was to have my partner live a full life after his retierment with me and my family. Kaiser will always be with me in my heart. "

David "2/16/99""I am not a Vietnam vet. I was never in the military but I love and respect dogs and the contribution they make in our lives. I was watching The Discovery Channel last night and saw this incredible documentary. I was amazed at the many acounts of different experiences and then at thee end, devastated that these amazing dogs, so brave and proud of what they were doing, and who saved so many lives, were left to die in Vietnam. I was not able to sleep last night after seeing this documentary. It has had a really profound effect on me. I never knew anything about this before and I want to help get the memorial built. What can I do besides buy dog food?"
Deborah Godley "2/16/99""We would like to present this war-dogs site with our ""Star"" web site award, but need e-mail address and name of web site maintenance/contact person. Your film is outstanding, told it just like it was. It was hard to hold back a tear. Thanks, Bruce Speed Chief Petty Officer, USN, Retired (25 years)" "2/16/99"
"No" "I was very deeply moved by the documentary on War Dogs. I would like to know more about what happened to the dogs that were left behind in Vietnam. I am very angry about this and would hope that whoever was in charge at the time will be held accountable for their actions. Dogs may have been considered US Army property but they saved the lives of our men through their conscious efforts as living beings. To abandon them is criminal in my eyes." "2/17/99" "I'm only a private citizen that feels our men/women with K-nine units need more recognition. I sent a post to the White House asking for a Memorial for the K-nine units that were in Vietnam. I feel these folks need to know they are NOT forgotten and they ARE loved by citizens such as me."
Barbara Hooker "2/17/99" "since there was no e-mail site i can address maybe you can ansewer a few questions. yes i have seen the video and and do support your effort for a war mem.for all the dogs that have served our country, but have come away from with the feeling that it is not enough. if the dogs would have been returned to u.s. after service that would have been great, but to have been put down or worse turned over to s.vietnam was the hight of stupidity.i believe that if a war mem is built then an apoligy by the u.s.govt is long past due.any mem with out it lessens its meaning.since they were sent one a one way mission. do you know what the policy is today concerning the dogs?what about the ones sent to the gulf, were they left there also. maybe a congressional inquiry is needed to find out the person who made the desions concerning the dogs. if you can answer any of these questions please let me know. thanks-dennis "
dennis pickersgill "2/17/99" "I was not in the war but after seeing your show I wish I was. I wish I was one of those brave handlers with one of those hero dogs. I would like to know of the email address of the WarDogs page. I want to do something special for all the handlers and for the memory of there fallen friends. So If you could please help PLEASE."
