I am both a war vet (Gulf), and a dedicated hunting dog owner who loves my dogs like they were my own children. I was in tears listening to these vets' testimonials. I noticed a quick flash of film footage of a German Shorthaired Pointer when they were discussing the dog recuitment during WWII. My best buddy (RANGER) is a young German Shorthair and I am anxious to find out about what kind of involvement the GSP had in military service during WWII. Anyone with information that they would be willing to share would be much appreciated and will be passed along to the Official GSP web sight. ...for those of you who served in WWII and Vietnam...thank-you for your selfless service and for those of you who lost mans best friend in the line of duty...I am very sorry.

As I recall the kennel area was built by hand in a self help project by handlers to get their dogs out of the hot sun and rain. those who built it did a great job. The vet assigned started a program wherein once a week all the dogs were taken to the south china sea to swim. this cut down greatly on the cases of hot spots which of course you know was a great relief to the dogs and the handlers. There are some in my generation who know, respect, and honor those who served, and it's a shame that so many don't honor the dogs for what they were: soldiers and true heros. The way the dogs were killed by the VC and the ones that survived were left behind was heart breaking! We have 2 dogs, a Shepherd and a Beagle, and to look into their eyes and think of them being killed or abandoned is enough to make your eyes well up with tears. I was born during the Tet Offensive so I was not in Vietnam, but have relatives and family friends who were there. The tears I shed during the documentary the other night and the tears I shed every time I see the Vietnam Memorial are my tribute to the brave men, women and dogs who served for an ungrateful country and government! My thanks to all who helped make this LONG LONG Overdue tribute to our Dogs of the War, After all its about and for them that this movie was produced. For without them, the outcome surely would have been different. I have spent years living with an obscure quiet pride inside of me, partly because not many people knew the role these dogs played over there, and mostly because when I wake up everyday I at some point remember my dog ""SEAGRAM"" because if not for him I would not have the luxury and privilidge of writing this letter today. I was sitting in the Ashau Valley when the Tet offensive hit. I never knew that the dogs were just abandoned-- I believed the story of the Army not wanting to bring home any diseases, even though none of our dogs were sick. What a shame-- we really had some good dogs. None of ours were anything more than well- behaved hunting dogs that loved to track and loved ""almost"" everybody. "I was born in 1974 at the end of the Vietnam war so I of course do not know what it was like during the war, hearing and seeing the news about it. My father however did serve a tour of duty as a medic with the 101st Airborn, he was not a dog handler but was in a unit with one. I cried when I saw the War Dogs documentary, to find out that they were considered ""equipment expendable"" and could not come home. I did not even know about dogs being used in the field like that to help protect and serve our human soldiers. I feel so sad that this was never something that was taught in schools so we could all know what great sacrifices those brave soldiers made for us. I want to thank all the veterans of all wars, especialy Vietnam, for fighting so I can live free, I will never forget the price that was paid for that freedom. "Just a comment from a mother of 3 and a 13 1/2 year old Shepherd-Golden Retriever and animal lover who happened upon the fantastic documentary ""War Dogs"" the other night! My husband, kids, and I were riveted to the t.v. I cried and cried when the bomb blew up the kennel!!! Why, why, didn't the dogs sleep with their masters in the bunks?! And why did those in charge not let the dogs come back? I don't believe they had diseases -- it was just an excuse. And if they had diseases, we had an obligation to help them recover!! To just use these beautiful, intelligent and loyal animals and then just get rid of them? Forget them? Throw them away like equipment? Sounds like they treated them as bad as they treated the vets themselves! I am so glad that these dogs are finally getting the recognition that they have long deserved! I hope they are watching up in heaven and know that their sacrifices did not go unnoticed. They were brave and selfless like the men who fought. God Bless all of you -- man and beast alike!!!!!!! PS I went out the next day after the documentary aired and got a copy of War Dogs. I'd like to make a direct donation. Where do I send it? "

"Like many of the people who have already commented, I felt the documentary was very well done and long overdue. I do not consider myself ignorant of many aspects concerning our canine companions as I am the co-founder of a racing greyhound rescue organization and have always kept up with anything dog related. However, until this special aired, I had no knowledge of the military's use of canines. It made me sick to think our government, the one our furry friends assisted and gave their lives for, abandoned them or destroyed them because it was ""too much"" to bring them home. They should have been given the same respect as other military personnel and returned home to their families. I hope policies regarding this have changed since then. If not, maybe someone should do something about that. Also, I feel the documentary left alot of doors open and more programs could be made to address issues even further. Lastly, I giant hug and unending ""thanks"" to all the two and four-legged beings who put their life on the line for us. All of you deserve more than anyone (especially the government) can give." I love all animals and my heart went out to the men that served this country and the loyal dogs that aided them and also helped to save many lives. I am so glad that there will be a tribute to these wonderful dogs that got so little attention for their loyal and dedicated contributions. I think it is wonderful, and I will myself contribute to the fund of this memorial. I cried at the love the dogs held for their companions as well as the love that the soldier held for the dog. People offen take an animal for granted but when they have so much that they give to us as humans. We are blessed for having the honor of their company. They are a gift from GOD. I wonder what became of these wonderful ""pets/service dogs also.. I feel so sad at what I feel happened to most. How cruel to have so little reguard for the lives of someone that gave so much!!!!! "Along with many others here, I MUST say that I will never forget the ""War Dogs"" documentary. I intend to get the tape as soon as possible. As I type this I can't help but be moved. I was born during the height of the war (June 1968). Being an army brat we were taught early on about respecting our veterans, something I instill in my daughter. Most of the men in my family served in the Army. I knew about the use of dogs from WWII up to the present. I can certainly identify with ""man's best friend"" since I have 4 Golden Retrievers here. (spoiled of course) All the more reason I was so moved. Not a dry eye in the room that night. But I was also shocked and appalled how the military's view of these beautiful hero's was nothing less than ""surplus"". Either put asleep or put on some Vietnamese's dinner plate. My heart sank. Yes, a Memorial is VERY deserving, but as with our own beloved veterans, it is 30 years overdue. I applaud those responsible for bringing this into light and raising the money needed. But most of all, I honor those fallen, brave, loyal and trusting ""best friends"" and the brave and courageous men who loved and respected these wonderful creatures. God Bless You All!! And Last but not least, I agree with the individual who pointed out the inhumane and disgusting treatment of trusting dogs and cats in Asia and Phillipines. They are being taken from homes and the streets and being slaughtered (some still alive) for their coats AND skins!!! Contact HSUS.ORG about this dilema. When you see the videos which are not only horrific but very graphic you will be totally numb. I cried for 2 days after viewing this. Once again, Thank you to our veterans and to our other ""veterans"". :o)"

"After seeing the documentary on ""War-Dogs"" and reading all the comments from the handlers that were in vietnam, as well as the comments from regular civilians, what more could be said. I was very moved by the documentary, but more moved reading all the comments by the handlers themselves. I am proud to be an American serving my country and saving lives, but I have more respect for all the BRAVE soldiers and K-9's that have given the ultimate sacrifice so we may live in this FREE GREAT country...the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. It never ceases to amaze me how heartless the Government can be at times, by leaving behind the most LOYAL citizens that has ever served the United States military. Until now I never realized that K-9's were ever used in battle and now, thanks to the documentary and the soon to come memorial, all of America will know...as well as remember. This is truly a recognition that was long overdue. American Soldiers, past and present, would receive medals for heroism in the face of combat. Well these dogs and their handlers were on the front lines saving the lives of the whole platoon, as well as our great country....they too should personally be awarded medals. ESPECIALLY the ones that gave their lives. And the families that donated their dogs to America to protect these men should be recognized as well. For if it were not for them, many more lives would of perished. I salute each and everyone of you that served this great country in the worst conflict America has witnessed, as well as all the K-9's and the famalies who selfishly gave them up so the rest of us could live in the PROUDEST country of all. "Your story opened my eyes & broke my heart - I had no idea. I've never been in the military nor had any connection to it but I think dogs are beautiful people. It's bad enough that you handlers & your dogs were never honored but the fact that the military absolutely prohibited you from bringing your partners home is deplorable. After all you all did for all of us and for them, for them to turn around & betray both you & your dogs, I believe those Generals or honchos, whoever they are, should be court martialed for treason. ""The Country"" is made up of all of US, so by betraying you, both 2-legged & 4-legged, our heroes, they also betrayed the country in my eyes. They also betrayed the trust of the patriotic people who donated their pets to serve there. Seems to me that for you, the handlers as well as the dogs, this was just another form of torture inflicted on you, only it came from our 'side' which is sickening. Seems to me like those responsible would have a lot in common with Hitlers SS. The VERY LEAST you should have been given, after going thru hell together, would have been to bring your dogs home so you could share a GOOD life together. Or, if for some reason (I mean a legitimate one) that couldn't happen, like if a handler wasn't able to keep and care for the dog at home, then the dogs could have been brought home & given to nursing homes or orphanages - anyplace that they would have received some love & loyalty back that they so much deserved. I think a couple of the excuses that were mentioned in the program to justify leaving the dogs were a) concerns about importing disease & b) the military didn't want to risk civilians being hurt or bit by a dog. Give me a break - seems to me Ellis Island could've accomodated #a very easily & as for b well, they had no trouble coming up with disclaimers about Agent Orange did they...seems to me even a half-baked attorney could've drawn up a half page document to cover them for a dog bite. I hope the memorials will bring you some peace & my wish for each & every one of you is that you have a dog in your life right now & that there are lucky dogs who have you as their owner right now."

I cried my eyes out at the documentary, particularly where the stupid beaurocracy ordered these four-footed soldiers left behind to die. I can't believe our government could be so cruel. Of course, looking at how they treated the MIA/POWs, I shouldn't be surprised. I'm surprised they didn't order our children over there to be left behind to die also; in a way, they did. These dogs are like our children and our parents at the same time. I was furious and heartbroken. I'm going to buy the food and get the video, but I would like to do more. Is there somewhere we can write, to the government, to protest? Is the person/s who ordered this atrocity still alive? I believe he ought to be tried for war crimes, like the Nazi war criminals. Our government treated our boys and dogs equally as badly as the Nazi's did the Jews - genocide. Killing someone because they have four legs is not much different than killing someone because they are Jewish. I would really like to get involved and make a difference in this situation, beyond buying the food and getting the video. For anyone who cares to contact me, I would love to correspond with you. I have a very soft spot in my heart for the two-legged and four-legged Nam vets and for German Shepherds period. "

"I did not serve in vietnam, however I must say that I was deeply moved by the show ""War Dogs"". I knew that dog's were used as sentrys in the military but I had no idea that they were used out on patrol to smell out the enemy and booby traps. The show was very difficult to watch. Hearing the service men tell here stories about how these dogs saved lives was heart wrenching. Then to find out at the end of the program that they were left behind was an absolute attroicity! Although this show aired a week ago I still think about it and brought to tears over it. I will never view these loyal, careing and devoted animals in the same light again. What was done to these dog's at the end of the war was wrong. Who made this decision? Why were'nt these men allowed to take these dogs home with them? I believe that someone should be held accountable. You can be sure that I will contribute to the memorial which in my opinion is way overdue. I'm greetful for all the people involved in the making of the show for bringing this story to light. The public must be made aware and we must never allow this to happen again. "

"I was not in the war but I am a diehard animal lover and this show touched me in a way that I can't explain in words or any other way for that matter. My dog is my best friend and is always there for me when I need him and I can't even imagine how you felt when you had to leave your dogs behind. I think the governmet owes the dogs and the handlers a public apoligy and if it were up to me it would be done today. "

I have her Honorable Discharge signed by Vice Admiral - U. S. Coast Guard, Commandant. I do not remember the person who gave us the dog. I cannot make out the signature on the discharge. Do you have any information about the Coast Guard War Dogs. I would love to have info if it is available. We had Peggy for several years and she died at age 17 and was a great dog."

"I was not in the service and have never known a handler or his dog. I have just viewed the ""WAR DOGS"" video and am filled with conflicting emotions. I am proud beyond words of the men who served and the heroic animals along side of them. At the same time I am appalled and sickened at the callous, inhumane treatment of these courageous animals who gave their all. I cannot understand the war department stand on this matter and it truly disturbs me. These were living breathing creations of God and they were treated like so much garbage. On top of that, they also had no compassion or consideration for the handlers who had been through hell and back with their partners. Once again, a thank you to those who served and the War Dog Memorial is too long in coming. However, it cannot erase the injustice of what was done to these dogs."

We are a non-profit, all volunteer organization that saves dogs, German Shepherd Rescue and Adoptions, Inc.. Typically we get these dogs from the pound, animal cruelty, owner surrenders, strays, etc. We update them on their vaccinations and treat them for any known medical conditions (heartworms in 70% of dogs). We love German Shepherds and would love to see an official reminder of how they can help people in service and as pets as we've witnessed\ their capabilities over 600 times with the adoptions of these dogs. "I am a senior in high school. My father served with the US Navy in Vietnam. Because of this I have been forever curious about the war effort. He doesn't tell me much. I work at a local pet store and got a hold of the War-Dogs Video. Being a dog lover I was touched by this heroic story of so many brave K-9s and thier handlers. This story has and will continue to increase my love for K9s, perhaps one of gods most perfect creations. I was disgusted by the governments decision to leave the dogs as though they were equipment. I have been and will continue to spread this story in anyway I can. I shall include a link to the War Dogs website in my web page. Thank you for teaching me. May those who served in vietnam, human and K9, live in peace for ever and ever."

I recently lost KC to lymphatic cancer, so the pain of leaving those soldiers behind hit me quite hard. I have been in the Pet Industry for 18 years, so I have devoted a lot of my life to caring for as many of them as I can. Thank you Natures Recipe for bringing this out to the Nation. Too much of the truth from VietNam was kept from us. I have 4 brothers, two of whom were almost drafted, so the fear of VietNam and my neighbor not coming home was something I will never forget. Thank you to all of you who served, and I am sorry for the pain this country put you through. If I can do anything to help with this Memorial, please contact me."

"My wife and I were particularly moved by the documentary -- harldly a dry eye. It is a story long overdue and undervalued. I missed being drafted by 4 days when the war was ending. As dog lovers and Americans, we will donate.  Your story is one on the few heartening things to come out of that crappy war -- then the Army screws it up in the end anyway. "

I learned more from that dog, at that young age then anyone could have taught me. I saw the War Dogs documentary on Discovery. It was very well done, and I enjoyed it very much. I even went out and picked it up, and have been telling everybody about it. The dog that lived out the rest of his days with our family, was loved more than any dog ever could have been. It's because of him, that I have such a strong love of all animals, and especially of dogs. Thank you."

"I have never been in the military, but I truly believe in the capacity of dogs to do the things spoken of here. I do not have a TV so I was unable to watch the program. I have read the stories written here by these brave men who did serve. I would like to know what they mean by ""leaving them behind"". Were these dogs left in VietNam to fend for themselves? The uselessness of the VietNam police action is well documented, this information only serves to exacerbate this uselessness. How shameful, how very shameful!"

I just watched the documentary ""The Dogs of War"" and was moved to tears. I try to find words appropriate enough to express the deep compassion I feel and have always felt for all of those who served in Vietnam....but I realize that this kind of emotion can never be adequately expressed in words. I have vivid recollections of the ""nightly"" news coverage of the war, as a 9 year old in the late sixties...and have had it etched in my mind for what seems an eternity. The Dogs of War brought about an aspect of the war that I don't think many were even aware of. Not only did it succeed at exposing the true heroism and loyalty that these dogs possessed...but hopefully it made us all aware of just how insensitive we as a nation treated all of those that served, during and after the war. Hopefully we as a nation can learn from this and at the very least say thank you with a memorial to these dogs and their handlers.  Maybe ...just maybe...this memorial will awaken us all to the true depth, loyalty and intelligence of these creatures. It's long over due. "

"Air Force dependant and wife of former Army MP...I viewed the war dogs video when my husband brought it home from the pet store when he bought food for our ""son"", a beautiful Tibetian Mastiff. We have both had German Shepards as family members in the past. I was outraged that my government would allow these brave and sensitive dogs to be given to a foreign government, discarded as expendable equipment or to be captured by the enemy. These were American Soldiers. SHAME ON YOU!
